![]() We recommend you stay close to home and join the local fun with everything from charming horse-drawn carriage rides to the dramatic burning of Phoenixville’s iconic bird. At $875 for 2 nights this was up there with the most expensive accommodation we booked during our tour. There’s no place like home for the holidays! Our area towns are transforming into winter wonderlands, conjuring dreams of a White Christmas. Overall we enjoyed our trip to Waiheke - a bit more sunshine would have been welcome - but it's a fairly expensive place to visit. We didn't see or hear much of other guests staying in the other studios. We found Bruce and Jules had a friendly manner and were easy to chat with although as you would expect they generally left us to enjoy our own company. Bruce kindly gave us a lift to the wharf on the morning we departed. The in-room guide suggests asking for a price when ordering a taxi - I tried that and didn't get an answer. Taxis are a lottery - as mentioned it was $15 from Matiata Wharf to Wild Thyme but another company charged $25 from the accommodation to Mudbrick Winery, whilst the return with a different company (booked by the winery) was only $15. The hop-on-hop-off bus also runs this route. The hill up Tawa Street can't be avoided! The public bus stops at the bottom of Tawa Street and we found it easy to use to get to Stoneyridge Winery, walked from there to a couple of other wineries and then caught the bus again to Onetangi beach and eventually back to Wild Thyme. During our stay we used a track marked "To Little Oneroa" at Puriri Road which comes out at St Peter's Church at the base of Tawa Street (and vice versa) to cut out walking along part of the paved route to/from town - it was a scenic alternative. It's about a 10 minute walk down to Little Oneroa beach. The property is about a 15-20 minute walk from the main village of Oneroa in a quiet residential area and has a scenic outlook over the water. There was no mirror at the sink for shaving, I just used the one on the wall behind which was not the best arrangement. That was spacious with a large walk-in shower with good water pressure. Bath robes and beach towels are provided and there were plenty of other towels in the bathroom. Apart from a few hangers there was no storage for clothes - we just worked out of our suitcases. There was a tower fan in lieu of air conditioning which we found worked okay - we were hesitant to leave the windows open in the evening in case the mosquitoes visited. The sink for washing up is outside, to the side of the studio. There was a fridge (with a courtesy bottle of sparkling wine), microwave oven, a toaster and a kettle so the facilities are suitable for having breakfast or a snack but not for self catering, albeit there is a barbeque on the patio. The double bed had nice bed linen and was comfortable, there was a couple of comfy lounge chairs, a small table and chairs, a dresser for storing some crockery, glasses, etc and a wall mounted television. If sharing with anyone else note that the bathroom is accessed through this main area. We knew in advance that when renting Studio 2 as a couple you don't get access to the second bedroom however the main area, which contains the other bed, seemed quite compact. We were a bit surprised when stepping inside as it seemed smaller than we'd expected. There is a bit of a steep pathway down to Studio 2 so keep a hold of those bags with wheels! The studio has a spacious patio area with seating overlooking the garden towards the Gulf. We had arrived earlier than planned and nobody was around to let us in but after a short delay (mix up with contact numbers) we got access to our studio. As we had missed our host Bruce's email regarding pick-up on the day of arrival we just got a taxi which was only $15 to the accommodation. The property is located less than 10 minutes drive from Matiatia where the foot passenger ferry arrives from Auckland City. We booked Studio Two for a two night stay in March 2020, prior to the Covid-19 lockdown. Wild Tyme has three rental properties on the site - Studio One (King suite) Studio Two (Superior suite) and Studio Three (Executive suite).
